Calgary, AB – For the third year in a row, Calgary is playing host to some of Canada’s most influential impact investors, venture philanthropists and successful social entrepreneurs at the Capital for Cause: Back to Basics event, 8am-4pm, April 24 at Eighth Avenue Place (525 8 Avenue SW.)

Capital for Cause is the brainchild of Gena Rotstein and Patti Dolan. Rotstein (founder and former CEO of Dexterity Ventures Inc.) is the founder and current CEO of Place2Give Foundation - a donor-centered charity search engine that provides donors with the tools they need to search, evaluate and give to Canadian and American charities that align with their passions. Dolan is a portfolio manager with Sage Investment Advisors who has an ardour for helping investors align their investments with their personal values. Canadian Business Associations Join #RetailPhilanthropy Movement – Giving Tuesd’eh

Demystifying the Financial Complexities of Aging: 3 Part Workshop for Seniors & Adult Children on Financial Literacy and Legacy Planning

What started off as a basic conversation about charity solicitations to an aging parent quickly turned into a deeper discussion on what adult children and aging parents need to know to as they go into their sunset years. With the dramatic increase in Calgary’s aging population, the “sandwich generation” is being torn between their children living at home and their aging parents requiring care. Through this interactive workshop we explore some of these inherited responsibilities, and really simplify the financial complexities of aging.

Celebrating 100 Year Old Neighbours on Neighbour Day – Water for Riley Unveils the Finalist Designs

Calgary, Alberta -  One year ago, Water for Riley announced the unique partnership among neighbours that have existed side-by-side for 100 years that had never actually done anything together until now.   Water for Riley is the brainchild of Deborah Sword, a resident of Kensington district and member of the Hillhurst-Sunnyside community.  Bringing together businesses, charities, academic institutions, The City of Calgary, The Calgary Foundation, Place2Give Foundation and local residents, the multi-phased Water for Riley project is now entering its mid-point.

A competition was held this past academic year for ACAD and SAIT students to design a public drinking fountain that is as much a functional utility as it is a piece of art.  The students’ designs have been displayed at various venues around the community including elementary schools, art galleries, and the community centre.  Last month, the 21 designs were reviewed by a jury with expertise in engineering, architecture, design and urban planning. The jury shortlisted a final three designs. Those three will be unveiled at Framed on Fifth on June 18th at 2pm.


The “Sandwich Generation” are adults aged between 30 and 50 who are responsible for bringing up their own children while also caring for their aging parents. This group has unique challenges and opportunities when it comes to taking part in the planning of their family’s financial legacy.

This full-day workshop will focus on financial literacy for older adults and planning a legacy and is open to seniors and their adult children.  

Kerby Centre is partnering with several other organizations to bring this information to older adults and their families,” says Kerby Centre CEO Luanne Whitmarsh. “Too often these plans are made without including everyone in the conversation and that can lead to problems, confusion, and hurt feelings down the road.”

Experts in family dynamics, wealth management and philanthropy will lead participants through an interactive workshop addressing:

  • The inter-generational conversations on wealth and inheritance
  • Flags to look for when supporting aging parents in their financial management
  • Articulating your legacy so that your "kids" hear you
  • Organizing and sourcing the documents you should have on hand
